The Free Trade Zones and General Services Employees’ Union (FTZ&GSEU) says it is paying close attention to the proposed expropriation bill, as garment factories are amongst the companies identified to be taken over by the government if the bill is passed.

We have received word that 37 companies which are incurring losses are to be taken over by the government and that these include several garment factories, the General Secretary of union Anton Marks said.

He pointed out that the garment factories which are to be nationalized are currently closed down and that the workers of these companies are yet to be compensated.

If these garment factories are eventually taken over by the government, we would like to know the government’s proposed plan on providing compensation to the workers and other similar issues, Mr. Marks told Ada Derana. “We will direct our attention towards this.”
