United National Party MP Harin Fernando today (Nov 11) stressed the importance of UNP leaders working unitedly to avoid a third party from taking over leadership.

Under the current situation, all three leaders of the United National Party (UNP) need to work unitedly. If not there is room for a third party to take over leadership of the UNP, without these three leaders, the Badulla District Parliamentarian said.

The person who comes forward, to carry on with the fight against the government, has the capability of rising up within the party, he stated pointing out that it is not the UNP which has broken-down but the government.

Sri Lanka in the near future will have to face the same fate suffered by Greece, he told media during a press conference today.

He detailed that the main three reasons behind the downfall of Greece was, the country’s highest expenditure being defence expenditure, the lack of financial discipline and hosting the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

“If Sri Lanka is given the opportunity to host the Commonwealth Games in 2018, around Rs. 400 billion will have to be spent for it for infrastructure alone.” Harin Fernando claimed, in order to settle that amount Sri Lanka would have to be indebted to China, “which charges interest after interest”.

He further pointed out that infrastructure is to be developed in that manner the country would end up suffering immense losses due to the Commonwealth Games.
