December 4, 2011   07:43 pm

Upali Dharmadasa today officially announced his candidacy for President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) at the election scheduled for January 03.

Dharmadasa was the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee before it was dissolved on November 14 by Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

Upali Dharmadasa who is seeking his second term as the head of Sri Lanka Cricket was earlier the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka in 1996.

The only other known candidate for the Chairmanship of SLC is MP Thilanga Sumathipala who was the President of the SLC, then the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka, from 1997–1998, 2000–2001 and 2003-2004.

The SLC election is scheduled to be held on January 3, 2012 after it was postponed from December 27 due to sports laws.

Elections for Sri Lanka’s cricket governing body are being held for the first time since 2004, in line with the recommendation of the International Cricket Council (ICC) that all Cricket Boards should be independent elected bodies and free from political influence.
