It will be mandatory to transport vegetables and fruits in plastic containers with effect from midnight December 11, Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade, Johnston Fernando stated.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) stated earlier this year that wood or plastic containers have to be used for the transportation of vegetables, adding that proper legal action will be taken against those who do not abide by this rule.

This decree will come into affect under Article 10 of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.

400,000 plastic containers were distributed in February in order to be used for the transportation of vegetables.

The Minister stated earlier this year that using plastic containers to transport vegetables will be compulsory from March 1 onwards.

The main purpose of switching to plastic vegetable containers has been to lessen the wastage occurring through the transportation of fruits and vegetables.
