G.C.E. O/L pass marks lowered to 17: Anura Kumara

MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that the pass marks for a Simple (S) Pass in Maths in the G.C.E. Ordinary level examinations had been lowered to 17 marks last year. Education qualifications should not be derogated in this manner, he said in Parliament today (Dec. 15).

The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) Parliamentary Group Leader stated that by lowering the pass marks the education level of the students will break down and that it is “unfavorable” towards the students.

Responding to these accusations the Deputy Minister of Education Vijith Vijayamuni Soysa stated that each year the grading level is raised or lowered due to various reasons.

He however added that he was not aware the pass mark for last year’s examination had been lowered in such a manner.

Speaker Chamal Rajapakse then said that the issue should be looked into and necessary action taken.
