
Twenty one persons injured following the tense situation at the Welikada Magazine Prison have been hospitalized while two persons are critical, hospital sources said.
Of the injured twenty are said to be inmates while one prison official has also been injured after violent clashes broke out at the prison.
The tense situation had erupted earlier today after inmates protested against the actions of a recently appointed officer to prison.
Commissioner General of Prisons, P.W. Kodippili meanwhile stated shots were fired into the air in order to control the situation.
The fire brigade said it has deployed fire trucks to the Magazine Prison as a fire was reported at the premises.
