Oscar nominations revealed

Nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning. Mystique herself -- Jennifer Lawrence, who was nominated last year for best actress -- made the announcement with Academy president Tom Sherak.

Hugo dominated proceedings, receiving a grand total of 11 nods, including Best Picture and Best Director, for Martin Scorsese’s immaculate work behind the camera.

Silent romantic comedy The Artist is the early favourite for the big awards however, the black-and-white flick going up against Warhorse, The Descendants, Moneyball, Tree of Life, Midnight in Paris, The Help, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and the aforementioned Hugo in the Best Picture category.

The film’s star Jean Dujardin has been nominated in the Best Actor category, where he will go toe-to-toe with Hollywood heartthrobs George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

In the Best Actress category meanwhile, Meryl Streep receives her nomination, for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Other stand-out stories include Bridesmaids getting nods for Screenplay and Supporting Actress (Melissa McCarthy) and Rooney Mara receiving an acting nod for her performance in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, while Jonah Hill has been Oscar nominated.
