The Colombo District Court today decided to take up the petition filed by UNP Southern Provincial Councilor and Attorney Maithri Gunaratne challenging the election of Ranil Wickramasinghe as UNP leader.
The petition, seeking court to declare the UNP leadership election as violating the party constitution, is to be taken up on February 22 while notice was issued to the respondents to appear before court on the said date.
The United National Party (UNP) Working Committee including Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe have been named as respondents in the petition, which claims that every ballot paper of the election contained a number, despite the party constitution stating that the leader should be selected in a secret ballot.
Therefore the secrecy of the election was not secured, the petitioner makes an argument.
