
Three Sri Lankans were arrested in Rameswaram, Tamil Nade today for trying to flee the island town to Sri Lanka without proper documents, Indian police said. They said Nishant (43) and Abdul Kalam were released from Puzhal Central jail a few days back after serving a 11 year sentence for smuggling heroin in 2001.
The third person Mohammed Khader, who had come to India in 2003 from Vavuniya district was involved in many illegal activities, including sending refugees back to Sri Lanka in ferries without proper documents, they said.
Police acting on a tip off that the three had gathered at a particular spot to flee the town,r ushed to the spot and nabbed them and found they did not possess the required documents. They said investigation is on to ascertain how Nishant and Kalam, who had been sent to a special camp at Chengalapttu after their release, escaped from there and come to this town, PTI reports.
