Russia speaking at the UNHRC session a short while ago stated that it will vote against the resolution as it is an attempt to dictate to a sovereign state how it should handle domestic issues. Russia also called other member states to vote against the resolution.
UN is based on sovereignty and non-interference in internal matters of member states, Russia said. It hence added that this was a clear politicization of the council.
Taking the floor before Russia, Ecuador stated that it will vote against the resolution stating that the issue of Sri Lanka was taken up at the Universal Periodic Review(UPR) and questioned as to why take sudden action now.
Ecuador claimed that the UNHRC should be unbiased and that in Sri Lanka there have been clear signs of political willingness after the war in 2009 and that there was no question about it.
