2000 displaced after mini cyclone hits Vavuniya

Around 2000 people have been displaced and close to 200 houses destroyed from strong winds and rain due to a mini cyclone that swept through the Settikulam area in Vavuniya yesterday.

Nine persons were injured and hospitalized due to the strong winds which affected the IDP camps area in Settikulam.

It has been reported that the area is currently experiencing a power outage while the affected are being provided relief through police intervention.

Meanwhile the Meteorological Department states that showers are expected in several parts of the island today (01).
