Mines bureau to probe Kinniya smoke incident

Sri Lanka’s Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) says it will commence an investigation regarding the appearing of smoke from the earth in Kinniya, Tricomalee.
Chairman of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau Dr. N.P. Wijayananda said the bureau had received reports that smoke had produced from the earth in the Kinniya area and that a special team will be deployed to the location on Tuesday.
He cited the many hot water springs in the area as the probable cause for the smoke, which had appeared on Friday (04) when a resident of in Turai Adi near the Kinniya Bridge dug up a hole to dump garbage.
Police and army personnel were later deployed to control a tense situation which had ensued as crowds flocked to witness the mysterious flames and smoke coming out of the ground. (AdaDerana)
