OPNA ordered to pay Rs. 50M compensation to Diyawadana Nilame

The Colombo District Court today ordered 3 persons of the Organization for Protection of National Assets to pay compensation of Rs. 50 million to the Diyawadana Nilame of Sri Dalada Maligawa, Pradeep Nilanga Dela Bandara, over a defamation lawsuit.

The case had been filed by Nilanga Dela Bandara, citing statement made by the Organization for Protection of National Assets claiming that 23 gold plated Lord Buddha statues in the new shrine room of the Dalada Maligawa were missing.

The statement was also published in certain newspapers, the Diyawadana Nilame stated adding that it defamed his character.

Therefore Colombo District Judge Dhammika Ganepala ordered 3 officials of the organization to pay Rs. 50 million as compensation for the defamatory statement.
