After two cases of infant killing were reported in Padukka and Omanthai yesterday (June 20) Police Spokesman, SP Ajith Rohana revealed that reports of infant killings and abandoning had risen in recent times.

A woman who was bleeding heavily entered the Homagama hospital yesterday following which the hospital staff had realized that the woman had just given birth.

Due to the nature of the situation, the hospital authorities informed the police of the incident after which the police had conducted a search at the woman’s home where they had found her dead child inside a cupboard.

Similarly in Omanthai, a woman had allegedly buried her infant child alive soon after giving birth, while the woman’s mother had unearthed the child who died a little while later. The suspect’s mother had then informed the police of the incident, SP Ajith Rohana stated.

He stated that there are several government and non-government organizations that can aid a mother who is too poor to raise a child or has had an unexpected pregnancy. He further requested the public to seek help from these organizations and stop infant killings.
