A suspect has been arrested by Katupotha Police for kidnapping a student with the intention of demanding ransom. The 8-year-old child was kidnapped yesterday (07) near his school by an individual on a motorcycle.

His father had later lodged a complaint with the Katupotha Police, who uncovered information that the child was taken from the motorcycle and put inside a van which had driven off.

It is reported that police officers had proceeded to chase after the van, in which the kidnapper had attempted to drop the child off at the Katupotha Junction and flee.

However, the officers had succeeded in apprehending the suspect along with the vehicle in question.

During interrogation the suspect had confessed that he had intended to demand Rs. 2.5 million as ransom from the child’s parents.

The suspect is to be produced before the Wariyapola Magistrate Court today.
