July 18, 2012   08:53 am

A 1000kg stock of expired rice was found in the Kaleliya area in Gampaha while authorities state that racketeers were intending to change the date of expiration on the rice and release it back to the market.

The Cooperatives and Internal Trade Ministry stated that the stock of Samba rice had expired sometime in February this year while the racketeers had prepared to sell the stock with a fake expiration date.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) had also raided a similar racket in Colombo on July 16 when 11,500kg of expired rice stocks were seized.

The CAA stated that legal action will be taken against these traders and that punishments will be dealt out.
