Police get Rs.5 million to remove election posters

The Elections Secretariat has provided the Police Department with Rs. 5 million for illegal election poster removal activities in the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provinces.

The money will be used to pay wages of workers, who will be used remove the illegal posters in the said provinces, Head of the Police Election Secretariat Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne said. 

Meanwhile police called on the public to submit complaints regarding any individuals displaying posters and cutouts in a manner which violates election laws.

Legal action will be taken against candidates engaging in such activities, the Senior DIG said adding that so far no complaints have been received regarding the upcoming Provincial Council election.

Meanwhile preference numbers of candidates has been issued by the Election Secretariat.

Candidates of political party and independent groups contesting the three Provincial Councils were issued last evening and can be obtained from District Secretariats today (24), a spokesman for the Secretariat said.
