Student didn’t drink poison over z-score – Police

July 31, 2012   02:17 pm

Police today said that reports of a female student committing suicide due to the change in z-score results, which had sparked an agitation in the Dehiattakandiya town on Sunday, are completely untrue.

It was reported by certain media that a female student from Dehiattakandiya who had sat the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination in 2011 and was depressed after the re-release of z-score results had consumed poison.

However, police today said that investigations into the death had uncovered that the reason for the suicide was a ‘love affair’ and not the z-score results.

According to a release by the police spokesman’s office, the student’s initial z-score result had been 0.9637 and 570 in district level while re-issued z-score (on July 27, 2012) was 1.1121 with district level 375.

Therefore she should have been happy and not depressed due to the re-issued z-score results, is pointed out.

Police further warned that incorrectly claiming the student had committed suicide over the z-score results could prompt other student to follow suit.
