Cigarettes worth Rs.6 lakh seized at airport

Airport customs seized a large haul of cigarettes worth around Rs. 600,000 illegally smuggled into the country.

The suspect in question had arrived in the country at around 4.30am today in a flight from Sharjah, Airport Customs Superintendent G.G. Premasiri said.

Inquiries had revealed that the 34 year-old suspect, a resident of Wellampitiya, was handed the stock of cigarettes by another person at the Sharjah Airport, he said.

Premasiri added that further investigations are being carried out by Customs.
