August 29, 2012   12:39 pm

Olcott Mawatha has been closed opposite the Fort Railway station due to a protest march organized by University students. The public is advised to use alternate routes.

The Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) convener Sanjeewa Bandara stated that the protest is against many destructive decisions taken by the government and will begin from the Fort Railway Station and proceed to the President’s house.

He also urged that the government should solve the issue of lecturers, immediately open the National Universities and to stop the measures taken by the government to open up private universities in Sri Lanka.

He also added that opposing the ‘Sapiri Pasal’ project and the militarization of higher education were two other objectives of this protest.

He further stated that demanding justice for the students who sat for the 2011 GCE A/L  is also an objective of the protest.
