MP Hunais Farook and five others have been admitted to the Chilaw base hospital following an accident in the Mundalama Police area this morning, Police spokesman said. According to initial reports the Vanni District MP has received minor injuries in the accident.

Police said the accident had occurred at around 6.30am in Battuluoya on the Chilaw-Puttalam road, and that the group was traveling towards Mannar from Colombo.

 Eyewitnesses said the speeding Jeep had veered off the road, hit a tree and toppled several times before coming to a standstill. It was reportedly raining at the time of the accident.

The injured however are not in critical condition, according to hospital sources.

Mundalama Police is conducting investigations into the incident.
