Drunk man kills self after murdering, molesting girls

A 63-year-old man has murdered an 8-year-girl by slitting her throat before committing suicide in the Thiriyaya area in Trincomalee. He had also molested the girl’s 12-year-old sister before consuming poison and killing himself, Kuchchaveli Police said.
The man had reportedly committed the crime under the influence of alcohol while the victim’s father and brother had left to attend to their paddy field. The girl’s mother had left for employment in the Middle East around 7 days ago, Ada Derana reporter said.
Police inquiries have revealed that quarrels have taken place between the two families on several occasions in the past and that the crimes may have been committed as an act of vengeance.
The murderer had killed the girl, a grade 3 student at a Tamil School in Thiriyaya, before dragging her sister to the nearby woods and molesting her. He had attempted to murder that girl as well, however she had managed to escape and return home, Ada Derana reporter said.
The bodies of the 8-year-old girl and the murderer have been taken to the Trincomalee General Hospital for postmortem examination while the molested girl is being treated at the same hospital.
