JVP criticizes govt’s military mentality

November 10, 2012   03:58 pm

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna today charged that government officials have a mentality of using the services of army soldiers and Special Task Force (STF) personnel for each and every duty in the country.

The Marxist party claimed that the unfortunate incident which occurred at the Welikada Prison on Friday was a result of this and that the harmful consequences of using security personnel for internal prison affairs has been proved once again.

In a statement issued today the JVP also called for an impartial inquiry into the Welikada Prison Incident, which resulted in the deaths of at least 27 persons and injured over 40.

The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) meanwhile claims that in light of the situation, it appears as though security personnel had opened fire at inmates in more of an aggressive manner than in self defense.

The party accused the government of using military tactics to handle situations in every field.
