No electricity tariff hike in the near future - Ministry

January 25, 2013   01:02 am

The Power and Energy Ministry categorically denied rumours that electricity tariffs will be increased while declaring that tariffs will not be increased in the near future.

The Ministry further stated that the recommendations for the tariff amendment will be sent to the Public Utilities Commission.

The Public Utilities Commission functions under the President while electricity tariffs can only be increased with the approval of the cabinet, the Ministry stated.

The Ministry added that if the tariffs are increased it would be unfair for the 5.5million consumers in the country.
