VIDEO: Ministry launches probe into massacre of over 50 dolphins in Kalpitiya

A probe has been launched into the alleged massacre of over 50 dolphins in the Kalpitiya area after fishermen had complained that the dolphins were being killed using illegal methods.

 

A dolphin massacre was reported in the Kalpitiya-Kaandakuliya area on January 29 in which over 50 dolphins were killed, an Ada Derana correspondent stated.

 

Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Sarath Kumara Gunaratne told Ada Derana that fishermen had complained that illegal nets had been used to catch the dolphins while it was also reported that dynamite was used to kill the dolphins in the masses.

 

The Deputy Minister stated that an investigation will be launched immediately into the incident while the President too had been informed regarding it.
