UNP MP Tissa Attanayake raised concerns over the increase of the electricity tariff and the measly relief that was offered by the government soon afterwards branding it as yet another way that the government was burdening the people of the country.
Following the electricity tariff increase, President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated in his May Day speech that the increase will not apply for bills below 60 units while those using 61 to 180 units will receive a 25% reduction of the fuel surcharge.
Attanayake claimed that with 60 units people can only light up two bulbs and that a refrigerator alone takes up to 30 units.
He said that a leaflet campaign to educate the people on this matter will be carried out on May 9 in Colombo and May 15 in Borella.
Also speaking at the same press conference held in Colombo today (7) Provincial Councilor Harshana Rajakaruna stated that the Indian government had reduced the price of fuel four times already this year.
He claimed that the International prices of oil had reduced by 13% but the domestic prices of fuel had only increased.
