VIDEO: Wimal issues scathing attack on Treasury Secretary

June 11, 2013   12:12 pm

Treasury Secretary, Dr. P.B. Jayasundera is a two-faced character who is playing a dictatorial role in the Finance Ministry alleged Minister of Housing and Construction, Wimal Weerawansa stated exclusively to Ada Derana.

There are sectors in which we have progressed but the domestic goods have not been developed as fast as we expected in order to compete in international markets.

MP Weerawansa explained that the trade deficit between imports and exports has increased and therefore it has set off a chain reaction that has resulted in the bankruptcy of the Sri Lankan rupee, greater debts, rising cost of living and has had a direct impact on interest rates as well.

He blamed the Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera for this situation, claiming that he was the only character in the Ministry of Finance whereas everyone else had been removed from their positions of influence or given promotions and sent away.

The Minister accused Jayasundera of running a dictatorial regime at the Ministry of Finance which will not even be seen at an Army camp.

He explained that the even though the President is traditionally the Minister of Finance, the responsibility of the Ministry usually falls into the hands of the Ministry Secretary.

The same goes with the Defence Ministry in which Weerawansa explained that even though the President is the Defence Minister of the country the responsibility fell directly on the Defence Secretary, adding that without the dedication of the Defence Secretary the war would never have ended.

However, he explained that the Ministry of Finance was run by a two-faced economic hitman who is clearly working towards dragging the country into a financially troubled environment.

The Minister drew attention to the pensions for private sector workers which he stated that was a scheme that needed to be developed ideally by the Labour Ministry and discussed with the Trade Unions prior to its implementation but instead was created by the Finance Ministry and sent straight to the parliament with no prior consultations which ultimately resulted in the war being brought to the streets.

He charged that P.B. Jayasundera was working for an outside agenda in which to create political uncertainty within the country in order to facilitate regime change drawing examples from the time of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. He claimed that Jayasundera had been behind the economic failure at the time of the former President which set the backdrop for Ranil Wickremasinghe to take over and immediately improve the economy.

Minister Weerawansa added that Jayasundera will only leave his post after creating an economic environment within the country from which his successor cannot recover from.
