The Cabinet today approved to do away with the powers enabling provincial councils to merge. Minister of Mass Media and Information, Keheliya Rambukwella stated that a special bill in this regard will be introduced soon.

The Cabinet on June 06 proposed to repeal the President’s right to proclaim the merger of provinces under the 13th amendment.

Constituent members of the ruling UPFA were given time to study the Bill to amend the Provincial Councils Act.

The proposed two amendments pertained to the President’s right to merge provinces and the requirement that the approval of all provincial councils were required to amend the Constitution.
