The Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to take tough disciplinary action against local government members who have brought disrepute to the President, government and the party by their unwarranted actions, said the party General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who presided at the CC meeting at Temple Trees on Friday evening has instructed Minister Maithripala Sirisena to summon the 275 chairmen of the SLFP -administered Pradeshiya Sabhas (PS) for a meeting at the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday, July 31.

The committee has discussed the allegations highlighted in media recently against some PS Chairmen in connection with serious crimes such as killings, rape, robbery, drug trafficking and bribery which has plunged the Local Government administration into low depths.

Minister Sirisena said that at the central committee meeting stern disciplinary action was called for against those members in order to prevent a repetition of such incidents in the future.

Senior members of the SLFP central committee, including former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, National Organizer of the SLFP, Minister Basil Rajapaksa and UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premajayanth were amongst those present, the Government Information Department reported.
