The power that was limited to Colombo will only be given to the villages through the Provincial Councils, Leader of the Sri Lanka Sama Samaja Party Prof. Tissa Vitharana stated.

He highlighted the importance of the 13th constitutional amendment and holding elections in North in accordance with it.

Speaking at a press conference held today (August 8) he said that it was the government’s duty to develop the roads in the North and improve infrastructure but added that the government should also allow the people of the North to elect their own officials and representatives through whom they can fulfill their needs.

Prof. Vitharana stated that the government can win the hearts and minds of the people in the North through conducting a free and fair election.

He pointed out that the government should also share its power as it maintains all the power in enforcing the law.

He added that the whole world is watching this election and that holding a free and fair election will send an important message to the international community.

Prof. Vitharana added that the Tamil National Alliance was spreading extremist propaganda to gain political mileage while that was in turn strengthening the Sinhala extremists of the South.
