The Ministry of Health has decided to temporarily lift the ban imposed on purchasing of medicinal drugs from 4 Indian pharmaceutical companies, which have supplied substandard drugs to Sri Lanka.

The Ministry of Health on September 15 announced that it has suspended importing 122 kinds of medicinal drugs from the companies: Laborate, Vivek, Bafna and Elysium Pharma with immediate effect.

The decision was taken due to the companies allegedly supplying substandard pharmaceutical drugs to Sri Lanka within the past 4 years.

However, a sudden decision was taken yesterday (2) to temporarily lift the ban imposed on the companies in question, Cosmetics Devices and Drugs Control Authority Director Dr Hemantha Beneragama said.

He stated that except the six medicinal drugs confirmed as substandard, the other drugs will be purchased from the Indian companies.

However, the assistance of different countries is expected when purchasing pharmaceutical drugs in the future, Dr Beneragama added.
