Matara-Beliatta railway project starts today

Construction work on the first phase of the proposed Matara-Kataragama new rail-road from Matara to Beliatta will be inaugurated at 3pm today.

 

The Director attached to Matara-Kataragama New Rail-Road Construction Project Mr. V. Amaratunga said that the construction work will start today from Beliatta and it is expected to be completed by 2015.

 

Under this project, new railway stations are to be constructed at Kekanadura, Babarenda, Wavurukannala and Beliatta and sub stations would be erected at Piladuwa and Weherahena.

 

 The Sri Lanka’s longest railway tunnel which will be of over 600 meters in length will also be constructed at Kekanadura on this rail-way extension line.

 

The estimated cost of the first phase of the Matara-Kataragama railway from Matara to Beliatte is 272 million U.S.Dollars. China is funding the Project, Govt. Information department said.
