Sports will be made compulsory to all school children from January 2014, Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said today.

He stated that the decision was made after research has shown that school children have become increasingly vulnerable to diabetes and other physical ailments due to general inactivity.

Aluthgamage also stated that the participation at national level sports competitions has dropped significantly and if sports were made compulsory for all students these issues could be rectified.
