The Principal of the John Kotelawala school in Kurunegala, who was accused of shaming a student which lead to her suicide, has been transferred with immediate effect to the Zonal Education Office.

Saman Indrarathana, the Principal of the Kurunegala school, was accused of shaming one of the schools students over a facebook photograph, which lead to the girl committing suicide. Indrarathana was later arrested over the incident and subsequently released on bail.

The decision to transfer the Principal was taken by the Provincial Education Ministry following an investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, at a press conference held today (February 21) to discuss the incident, North Western Province Chief Ministry Secretary P.B.M. Sirisena stated that a three-person committee headed by the Senior Assistant Secretary is conducting a separate investigation into the incident as well.

Having examined the interim report, a decision was taken to transfer the Principal to the Kurunegala Education Office with effect from February 21.

The Secretary assured that the investigations were being conducted in a free, independent and transparent manner while also declaring that it will be completed speedily and submitted to the North Western Chief Minister.
