Buddhist monk assaulted in Elpitiya dies of injuries

The Chief Incumbent of the Saranankara Temple in Elpitiya, Wettewe Pagnnakeerthi Thero, who was being treated for stab wounds for over a month at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, has succumbed to injuries today.

The Buddhist monk was hospitalised with critical injuries on March 15 after being attacked by an individual wielding a sharp object.

He was admitted to the Elpitiya Base Hospital and later transferred to the Karapitiya (Teaching) Hospital, where he passed away this morning after undergoing treatment for over a month.

Another Buddhist monk from the same temple, located at 9th Mile Post in Elpitiya, was arrested and remanded over the incident while Elpitiya Police are conducting further investigations.
