The United National Party (UNP) today alleged that the election of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India “frightened” the Sri Lankan Government and that is the reason for inviting him for a visit even before being sworn in.

“The government is afraid of (Narendra) Modi to that extent,” UNP Western Provincial Council member Mujibur Rahman told reporters in Colombo.

He also charged that the government is more afraid of Minister Wimal Weerawansa than Modi. “He (Wimal) made only two statements and the President gave him a date to meet for discussions,” he said.

However, he added, that when 16 Muslim MPs in the government wrote a letter to the President 3 weeks ago seeking an urgent audience with him over certain anti-Muslim campaigns in the country, the President remained silent without calling for a meeting.

Mr.  Rahman urged the Muslim Ministers Rauf Hakeem, Rishad Bathiudeen and A. L. M. Athaullah to “drop their act” and to stop deceiving the public in order to protect their ministerial portfolios and privileges.
