The United National Party (UNP) today stated that despite the “fairytale stories” of the Education Minister, priority is given to political lists during the admission of students into schools in the country and that the Mahinda Rajapaksa College is a prime example for this.
UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe, addressing a recent meeting in Homagama, had alleged that a large sum of money is obtained from parents seeking to enroll their children into the Mahinda Rajapaksa College.
However, following these remarks President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena and the Principal of the school had rejected the accusation as baseless.
A sum nearing Rs 50,000 is spent each year by the parents of one student, says the UNP, adding that this amount includes various fees such as admission, sporting activities, events and development projects.
“The (Education) Minister says various fairytale stories in the political stage,” Manju Sri Arangala, the Opposition Leader of the Western Provincial Council said.
But no matter what he says education in Homagama, the Education Minister’s electorate, is stagnating and rotting in one place, he charged.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, he said that the minister boasts that students can be enrolled into schools now without any party differences, however that is not true.
“I know for a fact that the admission of students is done based on political lists,” he said.
There are numerous parents who have been unable to enroll their children to Mahinda Rajapaksa College due to politics, he said.
