Youth held with gold worth Rs 2.4 million

A Sri Lankan youth has been arrested by customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake this morning for attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs 2.4 million into country.
The 20-year-old, from Colombo, had arrived at the airport from Singapore via flight EK 349 at 5.50am today and was arrested after 4 pieces of gold, weighing 400g, was found concealed in his luggage, customs spokesman Leslie Gamini said.
Following the customs inquiry held by the Deputy Director, Mr. J.A.D.A. Perera, a fine of Rs 25,000 was imposed on the suspect and the gold was confiscated, he said.
