The striking Rameswaram fishermen heaved a sigh of relief as Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa ordered the release of all 94 fishermen detained in the island nation.

“We are happy that the Sri Lankan President has ordered the release of the fishermen in a goodwill gesture on the occasion of India’s Independence Day,” fishermen leader P. Sesu Raja said.

The fishing community thanked the State and Central governments and Mr. Rajapaksa for securing the release of the fishermen, arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on the charge of poaching when they were fishing on the high seas, he said. - The Hindu
