Strict actions against those who use President’s name for frauds

The Police Department has commenced a special investigation under orders from the IGP to identify those who pose as close associates of President Mahinda Rajapaksa or his family members, in a bid to defraud the general public in various ways.

A special police inquiry unit who specifically investigate with respect to this matter has thus far received 368 complaints, it was reported. The majority of the cases were related to where the public mislead by these offenders after promising jobs in overseas.

The police stations across the country have been also instructed to keep careful watch to prevent such matters, and to apprehend the involved suspects.

There are some 94 pending cases in courts, on this regard, while at least 138 people have been apprehended. The police investigations are underway to arrest another 39 individuals. Some 16 people have been found guilty over this matter.
