Eight held over ‘phone racket’ at Central Mail Exchange

Eight suspects including four postal officers have been arrested for allegedly replacing the valuable items contained in 3 parcels, sent to Sri Lanka by post from Dubai, with waste paper and pieces of chipped concrete.
Three parcels from Dubai, which had not been claimed by anyone after arriving in the country on May 03, were reportedly searched at the Central Mail Exchange (CME) in Colombo.
The Superintendent of Foreign Post at the Mail Exchange, JHM Samarasinghe, lodged a complaint with the Colombo Fort Police Station after paper waste and pieces of chipped concrete were found inside the parcels.
The head of the Parcels Department, a Post Master, an office assistant, a substitute worker and 4 other suspects were arrested following investigations carried out into the complaint, Fort Police said.
It has been uncovered that the postal department officials in question had received a sum of Rs 110,000 to replace the items in the parcels, which had mainly contained mobile phones and tablet PCs.
Police have also seized the 173 mobile phones and 4 Tablet PCs provided by the suspects to a store in Pettah.
They are to be produced at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (31).
