England pile 309 on Root’s ton

England batsmen piled up 309 runs for the loss of six wickets against Sri Lanka in the 22nd match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 at Westpac Stadium, Wellington.

England’s Joe Root smashed a century to help his team reach a massive total against the Sri Lankan Lions.

He scored 121 runs from only 108 balls, and struck fourteen fours and two sixes in his innings.

Jos Buttler provided the fireworks late in the innings with a cameo of 39 runs from 19 balls (six fours, one six).

The wickets were shared by all the Sri Lankan bowlers, Suranga Lakmal being the most expensive of the lot.

Earlier, England won the toss elected to bat first at Wellington. Sri Lanka 91/0 (16.0 ov). Tillakaratne Dilshan 40    in 46. Lahiru Thirimanne 46 in 50.
