Bribery allegations against former President sparks protest in Parliament

...

A group of Parliamentarians on Monday (20) staged a protest inside the chambers in Parliament against the decision to summon former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Bribery Commission.

The Former President has been asked to appear before the Bribery Commission on April 24. Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has also been asked to appear before the Commission on April 23 and 27.

The opposition Parliamantarisns including former Ministers Bandula Gunawardena, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Wimal Weerawansa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Rohitha Abeygunawardena sat on the floor and started the demonstration.

“Bandula Gunawardene leads a group of MPs supporting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to disrupt proceedings in Parliament. The complaint is that it is ‘not proper’ for the Bribery Commission to speak to him on the Tissa Atttanayake matter. Their argument is that the BC should not question the former President and his brother Gotabhaya Rajapaksa on bribery and corruption…. “ Minister Harsha de Silva said in  Facebook status update.
