An Indian national, who had allegedly attempted to smuggle out a stock of gems worth Rs. 9.7 million, has been arrested by the Sri Lanka Customs at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), this morning (24).

The suspect was arrested at the Departure Lounge of the BIA while he was waiting to board a flight to Dubai, a custom officer said.

The suspect had reportedly attempted to smuggle gems weighing a total of 200 carats concealed inside a cigarette pack.

“The gems will be forfeited and the suspect will be fined,” the officer added.
