Woman caught with cocaine worth Rs 85m at BIA

A foreign lady has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake with 12 packets containing over 5.5kg of cocaine, valued at Rs 85 million, concealed inside story books.

The European woman had arrived from Peru and was en route to Cambodia via Colombo and Kuala Lumpur, customs media spokesman Leslie Gamini said.

She was arrested by airport customs upon arriving in the country onboard Emirates flight AK 650, he said.

The parcels containing 5 kilograms and 578 grams of cocaine was discovered carefully concealed inside the covers of story books and fax rolls. 

The seized cocaine is estimated to be worth around Rs 85 million.
