The vehicle parade holding the torch of 30th Mahaweli Sports Ceremony commenced from the Independent Square under the President Maithripala Sirisena’s patronage today (6).
The Mahaweli sports Ceremony which enhances the sports abilities of Mahaweli farmer children and bringing them forth towards the international arena will be held for the 30th time on 15th and 16th September covering two days at Ambilipitiya Mahaweli Stadium.
The official parade of the 30th Mahaweli Sports Ceremony commenced after the religious ceremonies, and President Sirisena lighting the torch.
Escort vehicles, motor cycles, runners holding torches, Tri forces, members of Police and civil Security Forces, and crowds representing Mahaweli regions, joined in this parade.
On the way to Ambilipitiya, passing 111 Mahaweli villages, covering 111 km of road length a program was organized to present 1, 11,111 jack fruit plants for plantation where commencing it the President planted a jack fruit at the premises of Independent Square.
It was organized in order to make concerns about the contribution made by Mahaweli Development program for the national economy under the instructions of the President.
Mahaweli State Minister Weerakumara Dissanayake, State Minister Sriyani Wijeywickrema, Western Province Chief Minister Isura Devapriya, Tri Forces, Inspector General of Police, and heads of security forces, and director general of Mahaweli Authority Sarath Chandaraisiri Vithana and other officers were present in this event.
