UN recognises Vesak as ‘floating’ holiday

January 3, 2016   01:52 pm

The United Nations has announced that Day of Vesak will be considered as a floating holiday this year.

Earlier, the UN had recognised the Day of Vesak as an International Day of Observance.

The decision implements General Assembly resolution 69/250, which recognized the significance of a number of other holidays as well.

The United Nations said the move was “in the interest of respecting the diversity of United Nations staff members.”

For the first time in its 70-year history, the UN has also officially recognized a Jewish holiday.
