New Sri Lankan envoy assures continued support to Maldives

The new Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Male, Major General (Retd) B.R.W.M.R.A.B Thoradeniya has assured Sri Lanka’s continued support and cooperation to the Maldives. 

The newly appointed High Commissioner made this remark at the meeting held following the presentation of his credentials to Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

At the ceremony held this morning at the President’s Office, President Yameen congratulated the Sri Lankan High Commissioner on the commencement of his term and welcomed him to the Maldives. 

The High Commissioner said that it was an honour and privilege to serve as the High Commissioner to the Maldives, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

Discussions at the meeting that followed, were focused on the long existing bilateral relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, and ways to further strengthen the good relations. President Yameen noted the geographical proximity of the two countries, and pointed out that ensuring the stability and safety of each country was vital for the overall safety of the South Asian region.

The President and the Sri Lankan High Commissioner also spoke on the threat of global terrorism and the importance of all countries working together to combat the issue.

President Yameen was accompanied at the meeting by Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Dunya Maumoon and Under Secretary at the President’s Office Mr. Mohamed Naseer.
