UPDATE: The result of voting on the supplementary estimate of Rs 55 million moved by the Government for the fiscal year 2016 has been announced as a tie with 31 votes for and against.

A fresh vote on the supplementary estimate is expected to be taken in Parliament.

It was previously reported that the supplementary estimate of Rs 55 million was passed today (05) with a majority of 2 votes with 33 voting in favour and 31 votes against.

Article 151 states that Parliament may by law set up a Contingencies Fund for urgent and unforeseen expenditure.

If the Minister of Finance is satisfied that there are no funds already allocated to meet the emergency, he may with the consent of the President first obtained, authorise an advance payment to be made from this fund.

As soon as possible thereafter, a Supplementary estimate has to be presented in Parliament and its approval obtained, to replace the amount so advanced.
