Severe traffic congestion has been reported along the Baseline Road as the protest march being staged by the Joint Opposition is heading towards Dematagoda, Ada Derana reporter said.

The protest march, which has been dubbed ‘Jana Satana Pada Yatra’, commenced from Peradeniya on Thursday (July 28) with the participation of Joint Opposition MPs and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The final meeting of the march was scheduled to be held at Hyde Park Grounds in Colombo today (Aug 01). However, the reservation of the venue was cancelled due to repairs being carried out.

Authorities had agreed to provide Campbell Park, Colombo as an alternative venue to host the meeting but the leaders of the Joint Opposition had turned them down.

Sources say that the group is considering holding the rally at Lipton Circus (de Soysa Circus), Colombo.

UPDATE (4.00pm): The Joint Opposition protest march is currently heading towards Hyde Park Grounds.
